It is necessary to follow one rule when you restore an old building, a country home or a palazzo: you should never distort the real core of the surrounding environment. The restoring must show on the surface the effects of time and the characteristics of the building, while the materials used to restore should hide the intervention, in a way that the result is similar to the original building: it wouldn’t make sense to change completely the appearance, and we would advise to buy a piece of land to build a new house. It’s no good to build at random. Who decides to take care of a place/house usually escapes from city chaos and from the alienation process in the postmodern society, and is usually in search of a closer contact with nature and its material such as stone and brick, a closer contact with the inside and the outside, home and land, micro and macrocosm, just like it used to be for the countrymen until the first decades after the War. You cannot turn a casolare into a villa, and not even several apartments into a loft-like apartment, just like someone asked me, as if the loft was in the suburbs of Milan: the building must be kept as it used to be. At the beginning of the restoration we are in a place/house that is interrupted by time; it shows clear evidence of its age: the façade in bricks or stones, the old stable where pigs were raised, the cowshed, the countrywoman seems to be still walking in the farmyard, in her worn-out clothes, and her face seamed with sun and fatigue wrinkles. Nostalgia keeps those moments, but at the same time it pushes towards a possible future: here we could create a living room, there the study, a kitchen there, and all in a sudden all comes back to life, and the new inhabitants develop their new space, a new use for the house. The new project and a new life project comes to shape, together with the new building: the costs must fit in with the budget, qualified and skilled workers able to respect the value of the place, and builders, carpenters, smiths, painters, and gardeners. All must work, and follow its course. The inspiring principle should always be kept in mind: and also the ethics. And ethics comes from the ancient Greek ethòs, meaning exactly “home”. Siamo un’agenzia un po’ informale, non abbiamo centraliniste che smistano le chiamate, non vi sobilliamo di telefonate di ritorno, non abbiamo una mailing list dove intasare di annunci la vostra casella di posta elettronica. Non abbiamo case “di pregio”, solo case di un certo valore,anche affettivo,perché l’affetto e l’amore per una casa la rende certamente bella e raramente banale. Non siamo un’agenzia di nuova concezione, siamo proprio dei veri matti appassionati, capaci di emozionarsi alla vista di un muro vecchio di 300 anni ancora egregiamente in piedi, una vecchia chiesa in pietra abbandonata, un maggiociondolo centenario, una collina verde e rotonda battuta dal vento. Il nostro principio ispiratore è la bellezza perchè senza la bellezza è impossibile vivere e perché in questo mondo forse è solo la bellezza a procurarci conforto e rifugio. Il nostro vero motore di ricerca è l’emozione nei confronti di qualcosa di unico. Perché non c’è mai una casa uguale ad un’altra. Le consulenze sono il nostro pane quotidiano non per vantarci ma di esperienza ne abbiamo accumulata tanta in questi anni.
